Boilers and pressure vessels are essential pieces of equipment in many industries. However, if not properly maintained and inspected, they can become serious hazards, potentially resulting in injury, equipment failure, and costly downtime. That’s why thorough inspections by qualified professionals are critical to your operation’s success.

The National Board Inspection Code, or NBIC, is the only standard recognized worldwide for in-service repairs and alterations of boilers and pressure vessels. First published in 1946, the NBIC has become an essential guide for chief inspectors, providing clear standards for the installation, inspection, repair, and alteration of pressure equipment and pressure relief devices.
It also provides information and guidance to manufacturers, inspectors, installers, contractors, and individuals and organizations involved in post-construction activities. Updated every other year by a consensus committee made up of industry experts, the NBIC ensures that standards remain current with evolving technologies and innovations. For example, in August of 2017 in Arizona, the NBIC was updated and released to the public to keep pace with industry advancements.
The primary objective of the NBIC is to provide consistent, reliable rules regarding pressure equipment items and promote safety in every aspect of their operation and maintenance.
Provides requirements and guidance to ensure pressure-retaining items are installed correctly and function as intended. Proper installation is essential to prevent future failures and ensure long-term reliability.
Provides detailed information and guidelines to perform and document all types of inspections on pressure-retaining items. These inspections help identify wear, corrosion, or damage before they become serious problems.
Provides information and guidance to perform, verify, and document repairs and alterations to pressure-retaining items. Proper documentation and adherence to standards are necessary to remain compliant with regulations.
Provides information and guidance to perform, verify, and document the installation, inspection, and repair of pressure relief devices, along with supplemental sections containing specialized information. Pressure relief devices are critical safety components, and maintaining them properly protects both people and property.

ABI inspectors are fully qualified to conduct both internal and external inspections:
This involves inspecting a boiler or pressure vessel from the inside and outside while it is shut down. Internal inspections help identify corrosion, cracking, and other hidden defects that can compromise equipment integrity.
This assessment provides a thorough evaluation of the external surface of a boiler or pressure vessel. External inspections help confirm that no leaks, damage, or unsafe conditions have developed since the last shutdown.
While annual mechanical inspections may meet minimum requirements, jurisdictional inspections will require an inspection performed by a National Board–commissioned inspector. These inspections go further by following recognized standards that prioritize safety and compliance.
